SPANISH HYDROGEN ASSOCIATION
CARBUROS METÁLICOS, S.A.
Carburos Metálicos produces and markets industrial, high purity and medical gases, and develops new technologies and equipment for multiple applications. Founded in 1897, since 1995 it has been part of the multinational Air Products. The Air Products group is the world’s largest producer of hydrogen for third parties, with a market share of more than 50%. The company has more than 60 hydrogen gas and liquid hydrogen production plants, located in Spain, the rest of Europe, America and Asia, with a capacity that has increased tenfold since 1991. These plants produce more than 1.25 million tonnes of hydrogen per year. The Group’s hydrogen pipeline distribution network exceeds 500 km, of which 480 km are in the USA and more than 20 km in Europe. The company has more than 55 years of experience in hydrogen applications, supplying hydrogen, hydrogen purification equipment and associated equipment to a wide variety of industrial sectors, such as refineries, chemical production, oil and grease production, metal heat treatment, electronics, etc. Carburos Metálicos / Air Products supplies hydrogen in all its forms: gas, liquid and on-site production. As a turnkey systems integrator, it has hydrogen production technologies ranging from methane conversion, biogas cleaning, waste gasification, water electrolysis from renewables, CO2 capture, etc.
The Air Products Group is actively involved in the future of hydrogen as an energy vector, developing new technologies and infrastructures for hydrogen fuel, based on its experience in the industrial sector. Since 1993 it has been working to bring safe, modular and affordable hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructures to the market, participating in a number of key demonstration projects, both in Spain and internationally. The Group is involved in projects ranging from small stationary applications for emergency power supply to remote telecommunications facilities, to multiple vehicle programmes, including refuelling of cars, buses, motorbikes, forklifts, aircraft, trains, submarines, ships and spacecraft. Air Products has supplied liquid hydrogen to all NASA space missions.
The Group has built more than 120 hydrogen refuelling stations (hydrogenerators) in 19 countries, completing more than 350,000 refuellings annually, at 350 bar and 700 bar. It holds more than 50 patents in the field of hydrogen refuelling, and is committed to supporting the global automotive industry in its research and transition to hydrogen-based mobility. It has also developed a new hydrogen supply concept, capable of dispensing both liquid hydrogen and gas at high pressure (>350 bar), according to the specific needs of each customer. This means that the filling station does not require any on-site compression equipment, eliminating a high cost element and associated maintenance.
Carburos Metálicos / Air Products actively participates in Spanish and European organisations aimed at making the hydrogen economy a reality. Air Products holds the presidency of the European Hydrogen Association. In addition, hydrogen-related projects are also being developed at MATGAS (www.matgas.org), a research centre in which the Air Products group is the majority partner, the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
